I got in the car this morning to drive my 9 year old daughter, Ruby, to school.
I jacked my iPhone into the stereo and handed it to her as I pulled out of the driveway. Pick something, I said.
She spent several minutes scrolling around through my collection and chose something.
She chose this.
I listened for a moment to the quiet opening, puzzled.
What is this? I asked her.
The Bad Plus, she answered.
“You like this?”
Yeah, we played it last time you drove to school.
My little girl. This is added on to her taste that already ranges from High School Musical to the Beach Boys to Garbage. Eclectic, one might say.
Very cool kid. Did you play her the Tears For Fears original for comparison and see which she liked better?
I’m not a fan of TfF, Syl, so I wouldn’t have had it on my iPhone.
But she liked the whole album, not just the covers.
I have tickets to the Bad Plus in feb. Front row seats.
Very cool, KE, very cool. All too often I see kids who listen to what their friends are listening to which is supposed to be what everyone listens to and it usually ends up being crap or country, take your pick and most are the same. The fact that she is aware enough to say ‘this is good’ to something completely unexpected is something that will stay with her throughout her life.
You’re a good dad.
Today, I brought the big ipod, the one that has most of my music collection on it.
Ruby was again given the choice of what to play, and dialed right to The Bad Plus.
I’d mentioned I have tickets to see them in Feb, and asked Ruby if she would like to have the extra ticket I’d intended to give to Papa Christo or Kenny.
Ruby got very excited, and said Oh, yes!.
You know ever since she was a baby, she’s reacted to jazz. I’m thinking it’s time to put some miles davis and bill evans, and maybe art pepper on her ipod, see what happens.
