Oh, how I love this time of year.
Fall. The leaves change (well, kinda, it’s California), Halloween starts happening (and when did Halloween get to be such a big deal? When I was a kid it was all about kids and cheap costumes – now it’s… Well, fuck it, that’s another entry), it’s no longer hot but still nice enough for motorcycle riding and driving with the top off my jeep.
But then there are the other features of fall. Pollens. Dust. My furnace back in use after being idle all summer. Allergies.
And the kids are back in school. Little petri dishes, schools. “Here, I’ve got extra snot, you want it?” Which means sinus headaches and colds. Sinus infections and coughs. Hell. At least it isn’t like when the first kid was in preschool. Start about the middle of September and that’s it, we’re all sick til spring.
So I’ve done all right. We’re well into October and this is the first day I was too sick to go to work. I’ve got one kid with an ear infection (but she got vicodin and was funny – too bad that shit gives me a headache or I’d have some too), and me with sinuses so plugged up I can feel my eyeballs ready to burst out like corks out of champagne bottles.
No work, I’m thinking. Not much writing. But Reading though.
My lovely and talented friend Miss Andie Pants (Also sometimes known as ‘Cheesecake‘) gave me that book last weekend (I made her read Mystic Pig, she had to do me a turn), narrowly beating Darrel (I’ll read yours next, man, promise, and you rock).
Weird, weird book, so far. I’m only about 1/3 of the way in but it takes some weird-ass turn there. No spoilers, but we’ve already got a shark, pirates, a hot scene with some violent, angry sex, a couple of killings, and a man in an insane asylum.
The writing seemed a little stiff and stilted early on but it’s growing on me. I’m hoping she can pull this out as well as it’s going so far.
I found a problem, though, with having a laptop and a nice wireless network at home. I was thinking, go to bed, I still have IM, I still have Ecto, I can do some writing, do some chatting. Only I didn’t think about how this would also mean I would be working. Drat. That’s not what I meant to do when I called in sick. Bed is no longer an escape from work.
But the cyber-sex made me feel much better.
I wish that were true; everyone else was fucking working today too.
Ok. Time for a triple dose of hybernol, a scotch, and whatever else I have in the medicine cabinet. I’m planning to sleep this thing off. See you around the 31st. Just have my costume ready…
(I just realized this was my 100th entry. Wow. That’s an unexpected milestone)
